Thank You, First Responders

He was triggering as we talked. Our conversation took him back to trauma so intense that he was reliving it.

 Triggering is more than a very vivid memory. The whole body reacts. Often, the individual can see and hear, feel, smell, and even taste the experience again. It may bring back a flood of emotions, including but not limited to, panic or fear.

He was triggering, but he had been there before. From experience, he knew that he could endure this level of intensity. He understood that talking through it could help. Most importantly, he knew that God was there with him. He trusted God’s readiness to help. We turned to God’s Word and to prayer.

He was triggering, so I kept the sentences short and to the point. Complex sentences don’t register well at that moment. We reminded ourselves: God is perfect love. He is faithful. He is present now. He will remain with us. Jesus has forgiven every sin. We can find comfort in God. God is our refuge, even in our toughest of moments.

Why don’t we need to be afraid? Why can we trust?

  • God is our Redeemer. He took our sins away.
  • He adopted us as his family. He named us as his very own in baptism.
  • He promised, “I am with you.”
  • He told us that although there will be trauma, he goes through it with us.
  • Like a flood, trouble will enter our lives. God doesn’t promise to keep the flood away; rather he promises to hold our heads above the water.
  • Sometimes it will be like being in a fire. But God is there, protecting our faith. We will have the refuge of God rather than the flames of hell.

How can we be sure?

  • Because God is the holy, the perfect One. He does not lie.
  • Because God is our Savior. He entered our pit from which we had no escape. He carries us out in the arms of our Good Shepherd.

Read this truth in Isaiah 43:1-3. Can you find each of the points stated above?

1 But now, this is what the LORD says—

he who created you, Jacob,

he who formed you, Israel:

“Do not fear, for I have redeemed you;

I have summoned you by name; you are mine.

2 When you pass through the waters,

I will be with you;

and when you pass through the rivers,

they will not sweep over you.

When you walk through the fire,

you will not be burned;

the flames will not set you ablaze.

3 For I am the LORD your God,

the Holy One of Israel, your Savior;

What a privilege it is to serve those who serve the public. Thank you for giving me that privilege, for the opportunity to serve these public servants. Thank you, because your partnership allows us to bring healing to hurting souls behind any wall.
