You Are Worth More

You Are Worth More

How do we navigate this sinful world that tells us a perfect image matters above all else? The answer: Remember that we are God's precious treasures!

A short while ago I had the privilege of ministering to someone who’s been seeking treatment for an eating disorder. People suffering from eating disorders (and their unhealthy coping mechanisms) face some very unique challenges. For unlike an alcoholic whose recovery strategy begins with their not drinking alcohol, eating disorder sufferers cannot simply stop eating. Their recovery requires them to develop a healthy relationship with something that triggers their disorder — food.

The last time we spoke was right after she left the treatment facility to resume her life once again. When my daughter struggled with an eating disorder years ago, I learned that people suffering from this disorder often struggled with a distorted body image, poor self-worth, and low self-esteem. Knowing this, I decided to share a few select verses from Matthew and what I hoped would be some comforting and encouraging words as she prepared to face the challenges that lie ahead.

Wanting her to know how precious she was to her heavenly Father, I read from Matthew chapter 10: “Are not two sparrows sold for a small coin? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground without the knowledge and consent of your Father. And even the hairs of your head are all numbered. So do not be afraid. You are worth more than many sparrows” (29-31).  “You are such a precious treasure to your heavenly Father,” I explained, “that He knows everything about you right down to the very hairs on your head.”

Later, I reminded her of two very important things that Jesus says at the end of Matthew’s gospel. “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. …And surely, I am with you always until the end of the age” (Mt. 28:18,20). “The God who loves and cherishes you is none other than the LORD Almighty,” I continued, “and God has put Him in charge of everything. So, as you step back into your life and all the challenges that lie ahead of you, remember that Jesus has promised to be right there with you every hour of every day.”

I think we would all do well not only to remember, but to ponder what Jesus said on these two occasions right before He sent His disciples out into the world.

  • We are a precious treasure to God and He knows all about the highs and lows that we encounter. He sees all the joys and the challenges that fill our days and nights.
  • Regardless of the challenge we face, the One who is sitting at the right hand of God ruling over heaven and earth wants us to know, “I’ve got this!”
  • Finally, wherever we go and whatever we do, Jesus has promised to be right there with us, to the very end!

Please consider partnering with us in this ministry. With your help, we can continue reaching out with God’s message of hope and healing.
